Stakeholder Theory

Define: Stakeholder theory is built upon recognition of interdependence. It suggests that the corporation is constituted by the network of relationships which it is in with employees, customers, suppliers, communities, businesses and other groups who interact with and give meaning and definition to the corporation. Apply: Stakeholder theory seems to promote a more cooperative, caring type of relationship. Community Organizers should seek to make decisions that satisfy stakeholders, leading to situations where all parties involved in a relationship gain. Community organizers work with numerous stakeholders in different instances. All stakeholders should be addressed in some way so that all stakeholders or a majority of them will be happy with an outcome. Adapt: Health Care administrators make decisions that involve numerous stakeholders. Whether it be the patients, doctors, hospital staff or even the families of the patients the administrators should think about all the stakeholders involved. Stakeholder theory should force them to examine the effect of their decisions on others and make the best decision possible for all people involved.

  1. Apply: When developing a community plan of action or community project, it is important that the planners know who the main stakeholders are. In order to create positive change within a community, it is important to consider that the most important stakeholder, are the people who live in that community. Too often, community developers think of others' interests before they think of the residents of city that they are working in.

Adaptation: When developing student services programs and curriculum, educators should always think about how such programs will affect the students, since they should be considered the main stakeholders by school officials.

  2. Apply: Stakeholders are a key aspect in community developments and one's that should always be kept in mind when making any decisions to insure that they are all in agreement when making any changes. Stakeholders may not always be on your side but even those on the opposing side are important because they will influence your state of action and can impede any action you decide to take. You can apply this in any policy that is implemented at the community level.
Adaptation: The international NGO Oxfam uses an analysis of their key stakeholders when promoting for fair trade agreements, through this example we can see that any type of campaign must include an analysis of the actors involve to see who is in power, who can assist you and who you need to watch out for.

  3. Apply: Every post gave good examples of stakeholder’s role in community development. I agree with their ideas. As stakeholders in order to make positive changes in community, they should know about community problems and its causes and should listen to community members’ opinions because change happens in where the community members live. Also, stakeholders should evaluate those changes if interventions effectively work or not and if another intervention is needed.

Adapt: In my field placement, I participate in evaluating peer facilitation program as a stakeholder. Other stakeholders are program staff members and some of the undergraduates who are in the peer facilitation program. We analyze problems of the program first. After that, we find the best solution for the program development. Before we modify the program, we meet peer facilitators and listen to their advice and their needs for the program development.
